Nissan Patrol Aircon Problems – Y61 & Y62 Faults and Repairs
Nissan Patrol aircon problems can leave you with warm air, weak cooling, compressor noise or an air conditioner that works for a while and then stops. The cause could be a refrigerant leak, compressor clutch or pulley fault, electrical control issue or a problem with the cabin ventilation system. A regas alone will not fix every fault.
The Y61/GU Patrol and the larger Y62 Patrol have different air conditioning layouts. In particular, some Y62 variants have rear cooling equipment that must be diagnosed separately from the front cabin controls. The engine, build year and fitted equipment determine which checks are appropriate.
Keepin Cool Auto Air provides expert mobile car air conditioning diagnostics, leak detection, regassing and suitable repairs across Brisbane Bayside and Redland City. With more than 40 years of hands-on automotive AC experience, we inspect the system before recommending work.
Common Nissan Patrol Air Conditioning Symptoms
The way your Patrol loses cooling can help identify what to test first:
- Warm air from every vent: Refrigerant loss, compressor performance, electrical controls or air-mix operation may be responsible.
- Cold at first, then warm: An intermittent clutch, sensor, control or evaporator-icing issue is possible.
- Cold while driving, warm when idling: Condenser airflow, cooling fans, refrigerant charge and compressor performance need checking.
- Grinding or squealing near the compressor: The pulley bearing, clutch, drive belt or another engine accessory may be involved.
- Gradual loss of cooling: A leaking hose, condenser, joint, compressor seal or evaporator should be investigated.
- Cold front vents but warm rear vents on a Y62: Rear blower, temperature controls, refrigerant distribution or rear AC components may be involved.
- Weak airflow rather than just warm air: A cabin filter, blower or evaporator-icing problem is possible.
These symptoms are clues, not confirmed diagnoses. Different faults can feel almost identical from the driver’s seat, so the correct repair starts with testing.
Nissan Patrol Y61/GU Aircon Problems
The Y61/GU uses several compressor and control arrangements across its engines and production years. Three particularly useful areas to investigate are the discharge hose, compressor clutch and pulley, and the electrical controls that allow the compressor to operate.
Discharge Hose Leaks Around the Crimp
A Patrol fault we have encountered in air conditioning repair work is refrigerant leakage around a discharge-hose crimp or ferrule, where flexible hose joins a metal fitting. Heat, vibration and deterioration can contribute to loss of sealing over time.
Possible signs include gradually worsening cooling or oily residue at the hose connection. Oil residue alone is not proof of a leak; the source needs confirming with appropriate testing.
Depending on construction and condition, some hose assemblies can be repaired using suitable replacement refrigerant hose and fittings. Others require a complete assembly. We inspect the leak location and explain the appropriate option before proceeding.

Compressor Clutch and Pulley Bearing Faults
On a clutch-equipped Y61 compressor, the pulley normally turns with the engine belt while the magnetic clutch engages the compressor when cooling is requested. A noisy pulley bearing is therefore not the same fault as internal compressor failure.
A failing bearing may rumble, grind or squeal, including when the AC is switched off. A failed clutch coil or engagement mechanism can stop the compressor operating even though the pulley still rotates. Similar symptoms can also come from a damaged belt or nearby accessory.
Some compressor designs allow a clutch or pulley-bearing repair without replacing the whole unit. That decision depends on the exact assembly, damage and parts availability. If the bearing is seizing or the drive belt is being damaged, prompt inspection is important.
Y61 ZD30 Compressor Relay and Cooling-Fan Controls
Nissan Australia’s 2007 technical training for the ZD30 common-rail Y61 describes engine-computer control of the AC compressor relay. On that configuration, the engine control module can prevent clutch engagement under conditions such as unsuitable refrigerant pressure, excessive engine temperature or certain engine operating demands.
The training also describes an electric fan operated when AC is requested. This helps explain why a Y61 can have an illuminated AC switch and a working cabin blower while the compressor itself is not running.
It does not mean every Y61 engine or production year has the same fan, relay or wiring layout. We identify the actual configuration and check the relevant electrical supply, pressure information and compressor operation before recommending parts.
Nissan Patrol Aircon Cold While Driving but Warm at Idle
A Patrol that cools on the road but turns warm at traffic lights may have inadequate airflow through the condenser. At road speed, air moves through the condenser naturally; when stationary, the vehicle’s fan arrangements become more important.
Possible causes also include excessive system pressure, incorrect refrigerant charge or reduced compressor output. Dirt and debris around the condenser may contribute, particularly on vehicles used for towing and off-road touring.
We assess the cooling fans and condenser condition alongside refrigeration performance rather than assuming the answer is a regas.
Nissan Patrol Y62 Rear Air Conditioning Problems
On applicable Y62 Patrols, the rear climate-control system has a separate blower, evaporator, expansion equipment and air-mix controls. Cold front air with warm rear air does not automatically mean the main compressor has failed.
Rear Blower or Temperature-Control Faults
If the rear vents have little airflow, we consider the rear blower, power supply and fan controls. If airflow is normal but the rear temperature is wrong, air-mix actuators and temperature-control operation are more relevant.
Clicking behind rear interior trim, missing fan speeds and rear settings that do not respond can help narrow the investigation. These ventilation faults are different from refrigerant leakage and should not be treated with automatic regassing.
Rear Evaporator and Refrigerant-Pipe Leaks
Y62 variants with rear air conditioning have extra refrigerant pipes, fittings and connections supplying the rear evaporator. A leak from rear pipework, an O-ring or the evaporator can cause the shared refrigerant circuit to lose charge and eventually affect front cooling as well.
A documented Australian repair on a Y62 identified leaking rear AC lines rubbing between the body and chassis, with major dismantling required for access. It is an example of a possible repair, not evidence that every Y62 has a widespread manufacturing defect.
Nissan workshop information also confirms that accessing and replacing a rear evaporator can require removal of the rear AC unit. We can investigate suitable symptoms and accessible leak locations, but extensive rear pipework, body-access and evaporator repairs may require specialist workshop facilities outside our mobile scope.
Other Patrol Air Conditioning Faults Worth Checking
Condenser, Seals and Refrigerant Leaks
The front condenser can suffer damage from road debris and corrosion. Leaks may also occur at hose connections, service valves, compressor seals or other joints. Any suspected leakage should be confirmed before replacing components.
We use appropriate leak-detection methods, including Trace-A-Gas where indicated, to investigate the source. A vacuum-hold result on its own does not establish that a system is completely leak-free.
See our Car AC Leak Detection service.
Internal Compressor Damage
An internally damaged compressor may produce poor pumping performance, abnormal pressure behaviour or mechanical noise. Severe failures can also contaminate the refrigerant circuit with debris, meaning fitting a new compressor alone may be insufficient.
We assess mechanical condition and possible contamination before recommending replacement. Learn more about Car AC Compressor Replacement.
Evaporator Icing, Filters and Water Drains
If airflow becomes weaker after driving for some time, evaporator icing or a ventilation restriction may be involved. A blocked cabin filter, where fitted, or a blower fault can also make an otherwise cold system feel ineffective.
Clear water dripping underneath a Patrol after AC use is normally condensate. Water collecting inside the cabin can indicate a blocked or displaced evaporator drain, although other vehicle water leaks must also be considered. Water is not evidence of leaking refrigerant.
How We Diagnose Nissan Patrol Aircon Problems
Our mobile diagnosis is based on the Patrol’s exact model and symptoms. Where appropriate, the inspection may involve:
- Vehicle identification: Confirm Y61 or Y62, year, engine, AC equipment and refrigerant specification.
- Cooling and airflow checks: Assess vent temperatures, airflow and when the problem occurs.
- Compressor inspection: Examine drive, pulley, clutch or control operation as fitted.
- Electrical and fan testing: Check relevant relays, wiring, pressure inputs and condenser airflow.
- Leak detection: Inspect accessible hoses, fittings, condenser and suspected rear lines using suitable methods.
- Repair assessment: Explain the findings, appropriate repair options and whether workshop facilities are needed.
These checks help avoid repeated regassing and unnecessary compressor replacement. Our Car AC Inspection & Fault Diagnostics page explains the broader process.
Does Your Nissan Patrol Need an Aircon Regas?
A Patrol blowing warm air may be low on refrigerant, but compressor, electrical and airflow faults can produce the same complaint. We inspect and leak-test first, then regas only if the system is suitable for servicing.
Many Y61 and earlier Y62 systems specify R134a, but the correct refrigerant and charge weight must be checked on the actual vehicle. We service eligible R134a and HFO-R1234yf systems using compatible equipment. The refrigerants are not interchangeable.
When a regas is appropriate, the service can include refrigerant recovery, appropriate leak checks, evacuation, charging to the manufacturer’s specified weight with compatible oil and UV dye, and final cooling-performance testing. We do not add refrigerant as a routine top-up to a known leaking system.
An inspection every two to four years can be considered, or sooner if the cooling changes. That is not a recommendation for automatic regassing on a fixed schedule.

Nissan Patrol Air Conditioning FAQs
Why is my Nissan Patrol aircon blowing hot air?
Refrigerant loss, compressor operation, electrical controls, condenser airflow or air-mix faults may be responsible. The correct diagnosis depends on the Patrol generation and fitted equipment.
Can a Y61 compressor pulley bearing be replaced separately?
On some compressor assemblies, yes. We first establish whether the fault is in the pulley bearing, clutch or internal compressor and whether a separate repair is suitable.
Why won’t my Y61 aircon compressor clutch engage?
Possible causes include a faulty coil, relay, wiring or unsuitable refrigerant pressure. On applicable ZD30 common-rail vehicles, the engine control module also decides when to permit compressor engagement.
Why is my Nissan Patrol Y62 rear aircon not cold?
The rear blower, air-mix controls, rear evaporator, expansion equipment or refrigerant lines may need inspection. Front cooling performance and rear vent airflow help distinguish the possibilities.
Can a Y62 rear AC leak affect front air conditioning?
Yes. On vehicles with a shared refrigerant circuit, a leak in rear piping or the rear evaporator can reduce the charge available for the overall system.
Does a Nissan Patrol need regassing every two years?
No automatic regas is required on that schedule. A sealed system should retain refrigerant; changing cooling performance or suspected leakage should be assessed before a recharge.
Can you repair my Nissan Patrol aircon at home?
Yes, for suitable conventional vehicles and repairs within our Brisbane Bayside and Redland City service area. Major rear-system or dashboard work may require a specialist workshop.
