Care for your vehicle air conditioner

Care for your vehicle air conditioner

These days we’ve all become accustomed to the comfort of an air-conditioned car. Like all blessings we take for granted, we notice them most when they’re gone. If you’ve ever experienced a malfunctioning air conditioning system, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Caring for you’re A/C system will improve performance and prolong its life. Most of us can't overhaul an air conditioning system entirely but we are all capable of following four quick tips on caring for your vehicles air conditioning system.

1. Read your manual

It sounds simple doesn’t it, but it’s these ‘expected’ measures people forget. Read your car’s manual and familiarise yourself with the specific requirements of your air conditioning system. If there are steps to follow for maintenance, it’s recommended you follow them.

Information on your car’s air conditioning system may also be found under the bonnet. Look for your car’s compliance plate.

2. Operate weekly

The best way to damage the air conditioning in your car is by not using it. By running your air conditioning on a weekly basis, you’ll keep the compressor seals lubricated and ensure the hoses do not harden.

It is recommended to do this all year round. Yes, even in the colder months. It’s worth noting, during those months you get out of the car for the next bit. Make sure the thermostat is on it’s lowest setting and the fan is at the highest speed.

3. Dutifully defrost

After running your air conditioning for an extended period, run your car defrost for five minutes. This will dry out the evaporator core, resulting in a cleaner and more efficient air conditioner.

4. Seek service

For those who are thrifty amongst us, sadly, self-maintenance isn’t enough for your cars air conditioning system. Regardless of its use, it is recommended to have your car’s air conditioning serviced by professionals at least every second year.

These services are usually best done during spring. This way, the service will highlight any issues, and required repairs can be done before another sweltering summer arrives.

Air conditioning makes our lives and driving more pleasurable. Don’t take it for granted, care for your air.
